Historical Churches

Preddy Creek Baptist Church

Built in 1781, the land for this church was originally part of Nimrod Branham's estate, the man who built the original Powell's store. The original church was located a little way from where the church now stands. James Madison and Thomas Jefferson apparently worshipped here occasionally. When John Goss, a local man, was preaching at First Baptist in Charlottesville, he decided the ideas at the Disciples of Christ church were more in line with his beliefs, so when he started the Disciples Church in Charlottesville, the Preddy Creek Church congregation split and some went to form a new church, Piedmont Christian. Preddy Creek apparently has a lot of historical artifacts.

Piedmont Christian Church

A little way to the south of Stony Point Market is Piedmont Christian Church. More here later.

All Saints Episcopal Chapel

All Saints Chapel is a little further south, right next to Stony Point Elementary on two acres. It's actually called a "mission church" and hosts a minister each 2nd and 4th Sunday at 9am for service from the main church in Keswick, Grace Episcopal Church. This mission church was completed in 1929 at the cost of $1,736, and is actually on land owned, but donated, by the Shackelford family of Dovedale (see Dovedale below). The first stone laid, in 1926, is a memorial to a young girl killed by a rolling stone, who is named as three-year old Nancy Feaganes.  Then, in 1929, the first sermon was preached in the chapel, on May 12th, by Rev. F. L. Robinson.

** A small, old book about the founding of All Saints Chapel resides at the Grace Episcopal Church.  Only a handful of pages long, it is still a very cherished and important reminder about how the chapel originated.

Chapman Grove Baptist Church

A small part of Windie Knowe was deeded to Mary Minor and then to William Chapman. Part of the land was deeded on November 15, 1898, between Isaac Banks, Willie Carter, and Lemon Banks.  On January 10, 1898, another acre of land was deeded to Mr. Banks.  The land was used to build a church for the community.  During the building period, a lay preacher and carpenter by trade, George Lewis and Willie Carter, worked tirelessly on the building we call Chapman Grove.  The building was completed in 1900.
